Diversity and Lack Thereof

According to Wikipedia, Chicago is 45% White and 33% black. Pittsburgh is 65% White and 26% Black. At first I thought I missed black people, but living in a city that is 55% non-white vs. a city that is 35% non-white leaves some things to be desired. More on this later.

There are a lot of jobs here (14,000 unfilled jobs to be exact)

There are a lot of old people here (second only to Florida)

The city is extremely humble (so they don't encourage people to come the way they should)

I can't find a black physician here.

I thought for a second that this may mean that the non-black doctors may actually be better because they HAVE to learn to deal with people of all races. When has that ever been true?

But... this may also mean that the black doctors in the city are that much better because one black doctor probably gets all the black patients.

Man, I don't know.

From Facebook...

In case you missed it:

"Ok, can I be a little emo for a second. I moved to Pittsburgh by myself with no friends here and no family and no professional network because the calling was so strong. I've been here a little under four months and have found a wonderful church family. I eat with the Pastor, his wife, their adult children and some other twentysomethings after church EVERY Sunday. When I don't come, they call and text to make sure I'm ok.

So today, I couldn't go to dinner because I had to go to work. (Yes, I'm at work right now, pray for me). The Pastor goes "What Are You Going to Eat?!?!?!" And I'm thinking, it's no big deal, I can eat Subway or something.

So his daughter just texted me and said she was making me a plate and to grab it when I leave work.

This may seem so simple, but these people don't know me from Adam. They don't HAVE to do anything for me. The love that God has for me is so strong that it is showing up for me through others. AND things like this happen to me EVERY DAY. Every day people go out of their way to make me feel welcomed and loved and I am so overwhelmed right now.

Thanking God for my Pittsburgh family (and new friends)!"

Dope Hair

All of the haircuts I've loved lately have been weaves. I think I want to chop all my hair off. My entire point of having natural hair is to cut down on maintenance time.

Lately, I spend more time twisting and retwisting my hair than I would wrapping and flat ironing permed hair.

#AintNobodyGotTimeForThat

I need to find a haircut though...

Have you seen any dope hair cuts recently?

Lenten Season

I gave up TV for Lent. I've been praying (and sleeping) a lot. How's your Lenten season going?

Servant to the Lender...

Man, I knew I didn't want a car. Not only is my car insurance about $6 more per month than I budgeted (which takes money from my gas fund), but listen to this.

My leasing bank called my car insurance company and told them my deductible was too high. My car insurance dropped my deductible and drove my monthly rate up THEN called me to tell me it happened.

Wayment.

This is what happens when you don't pay cash and own your own things. So I call the leasing bank... but it wasn't the bank. It was the insurance service center... They told me to call the bank.

I finally get on the phone with the bank. She puts me on hold. The call drops.

I call back. The customer service rep (misleading title there) tells me that there's NOTHING that can be done. I ask to speak to her manager. She puts me on hold for 10 minutes, but FIRST she tells me "it doesn't matter if you talk to a manager or not. They're going to tell you the same thing."

Oh ok. I'll wait. Manager gets on and says "now usually I don't do this, but..." Exactly. Hold again.

She gets back on the phone and says she has to transfer to another department and they will call me back. They also want to know WHY I want MY deductible to be so high.

I should have just bought a hooptie. I'd own it outright though and no one could tell me what my deductibles should or shouldn't be.

Please believe I told everyone: my State Farm rep, the person at the middle man company, the first customer service rep I got disconnected from, the second customer service rep who wasn't worth a hill of beans AND the supervisor: If you don't let me keep my deductible where it is, I WILL get another loan.

No person with good credit should have to deal with this nonsense from banks who are ALREADY making big money off of you.

I'm not paying the five.

The Tax Man Cometh

So I usually get a fat tax return. In my former years I may have... possibly... tricked it off. In recent [more responsible] years I used it to pay down debt, stack vacation funds and give myself reasonable treats for being awesome.

I did my taxes last night. Sidenote: I had to wait on three W-2s. Man, you don't understand the torture. I also had one of my company's send it to an address that doesn't exist, so I played myself on that one. I usually have my refund by now and am planning my trip to NBA All-Star weekend (#DontJudgeMe).

My how things have changed. Because I had three jobs and live in two different states, at first it seemed like I was going to owe THE MAN big bucks. But I itemized and despite owning NOTHING, I'm quite the charitable sister, so I got a NICE refund.

Who wants to take a guess what I did with it? I sent it directly to ING Direct. Or Capital 360... their new brand name.

I feel like such an old fart. The youngin' in me would like to trick off on some overpriced bottles of liquor, go on a vacation she can't afford or get a $250 facial (All things I've done before. I am not ashamed). But my responsible self is smiling at hitting another savings goal and making a true commitment to financial health and wellness.

Could you ever imagine that one would get such joy from putting money away and not touching it? It's not quite the joy of a shopping spree, but joy nonetheless. My financial planner should be proud.
